Working with Children Check

From 30 June 2010 the Victorian Government will require any person providing coaching or tuition services of any kind for children to obtain a Working with Children Check. This requirement will be phased in from 1 July 2009 and after 30 June 2010 will become mandatory.

It is the responsibility of employers and employees to ensure they understand and adhere to their respective obligations in regard to the Working with Children Check.

Recommended Rates of Pay

Undergraduate students should be paid the following rates:

  • Tutoring secondary levels up to/including Year 10: $22.00 per hour
  • Tutoring VCE Year 11 and 12: $25.00 per hour
  • Tutoring tertiary levels: from $30.00 per hour

Postgraduate students should be paid an additional $5.00 per hour on the undergraduate rates.

If a tutor travels more than 10km (one way) to your home, they are entitled to be paid an additional $0.60 per kilometre for any excess kilometres travelled both ways.

Sometimes tutors are willing to help two or three students together in a single session. In these cases the tutor should be paid at the rate of "time and a half", or "double time" respectively.
