2008 Monash University Summer Vacation Employment Fair

Thursday 7 August

Fair open 1.00pm to 4.00pm, Thursday 7 August
Recreation Hall, Monash Sport (Bldg 1), Clayton Campus

What to expect on the day

The Summer Vacation Employment Fair is a big event, with an estimated 2,000 students in attendance. The Fair will be open between 1.00pm and 4.00pm on one day only - Thursday, 7 August.

Dress comfortably but neatly, keeping in mind that you could be introducing yourself to your future employer. How you present yourself will be noticed.

If you feel a little awkward about the idea of approaching employers directly, remember that the Fair is relatively informal and employers are expecting to receive unsolicited approaches from inquiring students. Students who appear confident, informed and who ask perceptive, relevant questions make the best impression.

The quality of your approach not only signifies your personal interest and preparation, but influences an employer's overall view of Monash University students, their calibre and career readiness, so it's important to realise that how you present yourself at the Fair reflects upon you, your fellow students and the University itself.

Employers are typically more impressed with students who:

  • are well presented
  • introduce themselves professionally (perhaps with brief details about their studies and career goals)
  • smile and maintain eye contact during discussion
  • ask questions that demonstrate their prior research and a real interest
